Dual-currency model
Industry and product terms
Definition
The mechanism behind sweepstakes casinos: one currency with no cash value, and a second obtained "free" with purchases that can be redeemed. Legally it is what keeps the product out of gambling statutes; experientially it is indistinguishable from a slot machine.

- Attorney General James Stops Illegal Online Sweepstakes Casinos
Supports: Describes reviewed operators offering casino-style games with cash- or prize-redeemable virtual sweepstakes coins, typically sold in a package with another virtual currency.
Remaining evidence gap: The redeemable currency is not necessarily obtained free, the model does not universally place a product outside gambling law, and the cited evidence does not establish experiential indistinguishability from a slot machine. Legal treatment varies; New York deemed the products it reviewed unlawful gambling.
