Micro-betting

Industry and product terms

Definition

Betting on the very next discrete event — the next pitch, the next play, the next point — settled within seconds. The short gap between wager and outcome is the feature most associated in the research literature with escalation and loss of control, and it is the fastest-growing sports product.

The original definition and sourcing warnings are retained. These sources support only the claims identified below, not necessarily the full entry.

  • Who Bets on Micro Events (Microbets) in Sports?

Supports: Defines micro-betting as in-play betting on rapidly determined events such as the next cricket ball or tennis point, describes its rapid and continuous format, and reports an association with problem-gambling status in an Australian sports-bettor sample.

Remaining evidence gap: Does not show that every micro-bet settles within seconds, that the short wager/outcome gap is the feature most associated with escalation, or that micro-betting causes loss of control. It does not support the fastest-growing-product claim.
